So we've been talking about running this in the summer, just to try it out. Everyone is basically an acolyte in the Imperium of Man, and you do all sorts of things in the name of the Emprah. It's been said the game is quite brutal (expected, really), but it is rather interesting, to be sure.
Nothing official has been planned, but if anybody is interested or otherwise has any thoughts, etc. please feel free to speak up. _________________ And I'm still, still longing. Still cold... so cold. |

I think I'll build a character totally silly, otherwise, I'll get caught up in the grimdarkery. 40k's always had a nice balance of absurdity and brutality anyway. _________________ Words are the only bullets in truth's bandolier. And poets are the snipers.

After much thought, I'm thinking guns akimbo assassin from an Imperial World, or perhaps a Hive World. We shall see. _________________ And I'm still, still longing. Still cold... so cold. |

Hmm. Was thinking along the lines of a void-born sniper, or failing that, a lunatic, rosarius-thumping Imperial Guardsman raised in the Schola Progenium. The party's mad theologian, as it were. :p _________________ Words are the only bullets in truth's bandolier. And poets are the snipers.

While I was initially against playing a psyker, I must admit it now appeals greatly to me. Still quite a lot of risk in playing one, but the psychic phenomena/terrors of the warp are just too kooky to pass up.
"A minor daemon emerges nearby. Ha! Ha! Hilarity ensues!"
If no one plays a psyker, I think I will. If everyone else is ok with that _________________ And I'm still, still longing. Still cold... so cold. |

Heheh. IF I do decide to go, I may just go for the only serious character in the party. I've been seeing too many serious characters lately (N-Spyr, I'm looking at you!), and I think an Imperial Worlder Arbitrator or Tech Priest sounds fun (ie I wanna roleplay someone who resembles a weaker version of M:tG's Gix).
As an aside, I'm not as familiar with the rules, but I have been reading Warhammer Fantasy 1e (who has very similar traits). Do you get to jump careers here, too? _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

@BJ: Actually, it's not so much that the character isn't serious, it's that the consequences of one's in-game actions are so grave that it just goes right over the gauge to funny... for the player, at least.
The character, otoh, is going to be scared as all hell.
As for jumping careers, I'm not seeing anything like that in the rules. As I understand it, you stick to your career path 'til the end, though you do encounter a fork, so to speak, at some point in your career, which eventually leads to rather different builds. _________________ And I'm still, still longing. >_> I might go with the pragmatic guardsman...depends really. I'd play a priest but I didn't see this in the weapons list:

God-Emperor's left nutsack...that's a flamer hooked up to a two-handed chainsword, isn't it?

You can't just use the generator to make characters - if only because you can roll and roll until you get a profile that you want.
Tell you what - why don't I be the first to "piss in the pool," as Knightingale so fondly described it. Lemme guide you guys through character creation, and possibly run a 3-4 session game.
How about it? Tomorrow's a holiday... All we need is to do the gaming at a place with a PC, because we don't have books, and, err... The character generator needs to be run on a PC. Yeah, that's right.
Be warned though, that I have limited Warhammer 40k canon-fu. Some of you may have more knowledge on the worlds than I do, but while I'm the one running, what I say frikkin goes. Got it? _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

3pm-6pm sounds fine. It's enough for everyone's character creation and possibly introductory roleplay. The real games will effectively start next week, I think.
Oh, for the record, feed-the-GM rule shall be employed. If you want to talk about other food plans here, that's fine. Though I suggest my normal 50-peso pot luck. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

FYI, I can only accommodate a maximum of one more player, so it's either AAS or Knightingale at this point. Sorry, but I just can't handle two extra players.
@Acid Blue: b_b is right - place your backstories here. I need to see your homeworld, career, and quick notes. Nothing too elaborate, please. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

AdMech 1e37 Severian
Career: Tech-Priest
Homeworld/BirthShip: St. Moravec's Righteous Indignation (warship Voidborn)
Imperial Divination: Even a man who has nothing may still offer his own life. (+2 to Strength)
Quote: *chanting* Praises be to the machine-spirit/ May this lasgun strike true/ May its lenses be clear/ May its scope be zeroed/ And may its charge packs be overflowing....Amen!
The child of an illicit union between a Navigator of the psychic Navis Nobilite and an IG officer, AdMech 1e37 Severian was born in the roiling madness of the Warp Storm that threatened to consume the Imperial warship "St. Moravec's Righteous Indignation". Though the storm severely damaged the vessel, the slavering chaos beasts subsided after the child's birth. Though Severian did not inherit the recessive psy talents of his Navigator mother, her genes (and his ill-omened birth) still marked him as one of the ethereal Voidborn.
As a child, Severian grew up in the bowels of the ancient warship. Seen as a good luck charm by many of the Righteous Indignation's crew, Sev grew familiar with the ancient technology of the vessel. Things came to a head when one of the warship's Engineseers overheard the boy reciting the chatter-tone cyphers used by the AdMech Tech-priests to program the ship's systems. Thanking the Omnissiah that Severian was nowhere near the main gun batteries, the Engineseer proceeded to laboriously reprogram the now wildly-malfunctioning waste-disposal subsystems. After thrashing the young Severian, the Engineseer took the boy under his wing and inducted him into the mysteries of the Adeptus Mechanicum and the Cult of the Omnissiah.
Once initiated into the mysteries of the Priesthood of Mars, Severian served dutifully in the Righteous Indignation until he attracted the notice of Inquisitor (insert name here) when Severian's mastery of the ship's systems (and detailed knowledge of the deckplans) allowed the young tech-priest to track down a cell of Chaos Cultists that had infiltrated the ship's crew. The Inquisitor commended Severian's resourcefulness and puritanical fury when the tech-priest gleefully engaged the vessel's trash compactors, flattening the cultists into a bloody red paste as they attempted to escape through the ship's waste disposal ducts.
Now attached to Inquisitor (insert name here)'s staff, Severian has left behind St. Moravec's Righteous Indignation. He doesn't think much of the Inquisition, dutifully obeying orders so long as he can continue to pursuit his true calling: the mysteries of the TechnoArcana, the forgotten wonders that were the instrument of Man's ascension and forgotten during the ages of barbarism. Though only loosely versed in the "orthodox" faith of the God-Emperor, he is a fanatical believer of its parallel version, the Adeptus Mechanicus's faith in the Cult of the Omnissiah who unites the perfection of Man and Machine.
Besides his fascination for technology, Sev is vaguely interested in the mystery of his parentage. His Navigator mother was swiftly transferred from the Righteous Indignation, and maternal affection or not, Sev accepts that he was probably too much of an embarrassment to the blue-blood mutants of the Navis Nobilite. As for his father, Sev knows even less. He does not have access to the troop movement records that might identify the Guard regiment that was being transferred. Was he an elite warrior of the Cadian Kasrkin Stormtroopers? An aristocrat of the Mordian Iron Guard? A Hiver pile of street-filth? Sev doesn't know, and he would like to trace his descent, much as he reverse engineers a fine-tooled machine into its component parts to see what makes it tick. _________________ Words are the only bullets in truth's bandolier. Ryk, the Last Son
Home World - Nessus V. A desert planet with three ever-burning suns, the harsh living conditions make for an unforgiving landscape. Of the people that were exiled on this planet, only Ryk's family remained.
Career - Assassin. While majority of the colony remained loyal citizens of the Imperium (or so it seemed), a few would turn to worship the Chaos gods in the waning hours. At a young age, Ryk took it upon himself to hunt down heretics and kill them with whatever was available.
Backstory
Ryk's parents were part of the original colony that was sentenced to life on Nessus V. Ryk was born on the planet, and the population was stable for a time. Ryk's parents taught him to worship the God-Emperor, and for the most part the people of Nessus V stuck to the faith.
However, as the years dragged on, worship of the Chaos gods became an ever-growing trend. Those dissatisfied with their life on the planet would turn to worship the dark ones as they slowly fell prey to despair. The faithful were outraged, brutally slaughtering any heretics they would come across. Ryk, being particularly fleet of foot, was taught to chase down and kill the more troublesome heretics. Though Ryk showed some skill with a knife, he preferred his grandfather's las pistol, with which he was especially proficient.
For a time, worship of the Chaos gods was quelled. However, as the years dragged on, new cults would spring up consistently. Soon the cultists outnumbered the faithful by a slim margin, and they would have their final stand out in the desert.
The battle was long and violent. The faithful emerged victorious, but only Ryk and his mother was left standing. From that point survival was a tortuous slog, and they did what they could to get by.
One day, as he returned from an unsuccessful hunt, Ryk caught his mother eating some strange meat. It turned out she'd preserved her husband's corpse to be buried, but in a maddened frenzy caused by heat and hunger she'd tore into the flesh and started eating it. Ryk was appalled at his mother's turn to heresy, and killed her on the spot.
At that point, Ryk knew, it was the end. No food remained, and water was running low. There he only waited to die. But after a long time--Ryk could not tell if it was days or weeks of waiting--an Imperial ship landed near Ryk's house.
An Inquisitor stepped out and explained that he was there to examine the planet Nessus V and see what had become of its inhabitants. Ryk quickly explained all that had transpired, and all that he had done in the name of the Emperor. The Inquisitor admitted that it was all plausible, but he could not ascertain whether or not Ryk was born on Nessus V. The Inquisitor said that, to be safe, he would not take Ryk back with him. He intended to leave supplies with Ryk and leave another batch of people exiled there so as to repopulate the planet.
"No," Ryk said, "that will not do. In a planet as barren and hopeless as this, I have determined there are only two conclusions: death or heresy. If you leave me here it is likely I would turn to heresy myself. So kill me now, Inquisitor, or I will kill myself as soon as your ship takes off."
The Inquisitor examined Ryk, and eventually decided to take the lone survivor of Nessus V with him. He tasked Ryk to work with the Inquisition, rooting out heresies where they may find them.
"But remember, boy," said the Inquisitor. "If I sense even a hint of the taint of this planet on you, you will be sent 'home' immediately."
"I expect no less, Inquisitor." _________________ And I'm still, still longing. Still cold... so cold. |
