Posted: Mon Feb 15, 2010 3:28 pm Post subject: Bring Your Girlfriend to D&D Day! |
|
Requested by oghma for his missus, BYGDDD (it's a mouthful) is a one-shot game that feature level 1 D&D characters. The game itself will assume the default D&D world, with slight alterations to the setting so as to give it a slight renaissance feel.
So what's so special about this one shot? If you haven't figured it out, the confirmed players are princessa and oghma's missus. *hint hint* If you want to teach your gf (or have her watch) some Dungeons and Dragons, then you are cordially invited to partake in the festivities.
I can accomodate 5-6 players, and the girls will have priority when it comes to the slots. In case we don't get to 5, I will open up slots up to 5 players only. oghma hasn't played in awhile, so he gets 1st dibs on the slot, if ever. The other boys will ONLY WATCH. No backseat playing!
To keep things simple, every player with no prior experience will be able to choose options from the 1st Player's Handbook only. I don't expect to see Kalashtar Psion/Cleric Hybrid monstrosites or anything like that.
The game is to be held on February 27, starts at 3pm, and will be at boy_bakal's condo (I heard that Isis will be around just to watch). However, I advise people to arrive as early as 1pm for character creation.
ADD: Yes, if it comes to that, I will be defying the OGM this month.

Yez yez i'll be around just to watch. Playing's not my cup of tea (sorry! please to not hate me) but I'd love to watch.
I hereby promise that b_b and I will behave.
Yes.

Seeing as it's my place, it'd be great if I could join. Though if the ladies have all the slots then I'm ok with just watching also _________________ And I'm still, still longing. Still cold... so cold. |

@b_b: There might be a good chance that you'll get to play. I don't see a very large crowd anyway. But I stand by what I've said - the girls and oghma take precedence.
I'll be posting up details on the world soon.
EDIT: Rough draft of Roccamadour, the town I'll be using for the game (based on the Renaissance period):
Quote: | If you look at the area surrounding the town of Roccamadour, it might seem like just another small point of light amongst the chaos and danger of the outside world. The same kobolds harass caravans to and from the city, the same orcish tribes pillage and burn, the same wild beasts feed on others, only to be eaten by even larger predators. However, once inside, gone are the resemblances to what one would consider a "typical town."
Gone are the thatched homes and archaic dwarven-inspired keeps of most towns. Instead, advances in engineering and architecture resulted in structures that are, if not matching the fabled durability of dwarven design, then at least outclassing it in terms of aesthetics. Indeed, art is prominent, from the aforementioned advances in architecture to the emergence of drama. It is a bard's dream come true.
Roccamadour is a beautiful city, and some attribute this to the town's choice of patron deities. Corellon, god of the arts, and Ioun, goddess of knowledge, are believed to have given the divine inspiration for the founding of this town. The temples dedicated to Corellon feature the most majestic ceiling murals, while few can beat an Iounic theologian in a philosophical war of words. And as both are also acknowledged deities of magic, most clerics know a thing or two about the arcane arts as well.
Academics is the primary source of income for the town of Roccamadour. Nobles from places both memorable and forgotten send their children to study in one of the universities here, and some whisper that Crown Prince D'arfragnan himself attends one of them under an assumed name. Naturally, these nobles invest in the well-being of their offspring, and donate a good sum of money in protecting these youngsters. the gates are thus relatively well-guarded, and the town watch a little more competent when compared to other towns (though still not heroic in the slightest).
Outside the clergy, studentry and the muscle lie the professors. believe it or not, even with all that funding, salaries in the academe are incredibly low. As such, many professors also work menial jobs on the side. People who come to Roccamadour for the first time might be surprised to see eloquent carpenters or well-versed cooks.
Roccamadour is the town of the intellectual, a point of (en)light(enment) in a world filled with ignorance. However, some branches of knowledge are best left in the dark... |
Oh, and it's cliche for most games to start out in a tavern... But that's so Dark Ages. The game starts in a cafe. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

Is there any talk about roles yet? adykted's thinking about going either rogue or warlord. (Well, that's what she said anyway.)
Anyways, just expect some baked goodies on game day. I'm giddy with excitement. _________________ "I should mug people to this song. I'll get so many silver points." -Random youtuber

Haha, now that I've actually talked to PMP, I can actually post here! We'd be happy to show up, but our attendance hinges on whether or not OGM is on the 27th, since we'd be more likely to attend that with the rest of GRAIL.
So... basically it's "we're interested in going, but until we know when the hell OGM is, it's only a tentative yes"? |

Would love to learn more about D&D stuff and to finally meet some of you guys in person, so I'm up for the BYGDDD. And I'll drag Xtian along
(wait, I think it should be the other way around, with the event being called BYGDDD )
I have no prior exposure with D&D so I'd like to acquaint myself with it. But, like Isis, I prefer to just watch you guys play (sorry about that , I hope you don't mind). _________________ This is why we're awesome! |

Well, if Xtian's coming, I'm sure he can play in your stead. The poor goderator hasn't played DnD in years. You can even choose his character class to spite him a bit. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

I am still convincing her to play though so it might end up her playing with me or other person coaching her. I will find time to review the handbook and DMG.
I think it will be great if all the girls will play _________________ solbergb on sorcerers:

|
Well, I'll give the goderator and Her_Serenity one slot. It's up to them to decide which one will actually play.
After thinking about it for a bit, I've decided to allow most of the classes from the PHB2 to beginning players. It allows more options, without such options being overwhelming. I'd still keep the druid and shaman off-limits to the new players, though, as these classes in particular have rules that are somewhat complicated. Also, I won't put in the warden because of its storyline vagueness.
With that out of the way, it's time to think of roles. Roles are essentially the functions of a character in combat - controllers hamper multiple opponents at once, defenders try to draw out the enemies' attacks to protect his/her friends, leaders inspire, heal, and aid others, while strikers deal out the most damaging attacks.
Typically, an adventuring party has a character of each role, and a 5th character of any role (in my experience, the party generally ends up with two strikers, as that's the role most players want to get into). These roles are determined by your choice of character class, so when choosing, think of the whole group as well.
Here are the classes that I'm allowing for the new players, grouped according to role:
Controller
Invoker (think Moses)
Wizard
Defender
Fighter
Paladin
Leader
Bard
Cleric
Warlord
Striker
Avenger (think of Silas from Da Vinci Code, except with swords )
Barbarian
Ranger
Rogue
Sorcerer
Warlock
PS. To the oldies: I should have told you this earlier, but it should be fairly obvious that the primal characters don't exactly fit in Roccamadour. So if you're going primal on me, you better have a darn good reason why the character is inside the town of enlightenment (prncessa and I have already talked about how her potential barbarian ended up there). Don't break the mood of the setting, please.
PPS. If you really must try something new, the psionic classes of PHB3 actually fit in quite nicely (with the possible exception of the monk). _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

I think I'll play a cleric this time. While I've done it before, I haven't played a laser cleric in the past, so it should be interesting.
oghma, idk if you're changing your role since warden is not available, but if you do lemme know. I don't mind changing character ideas for the newbies' benefit, myself being a crotchety old man and whatnot _________________ And I'm still, still longing. Still cold... so cold. |

Let me clarify - I closed off the warden to the new players. If oghma wants to, he can make a warden, provided that he gives me a compelling reason to integrate him into the storyline. So, WCS, have a back-up character concept, oghma. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

BYGDD! goes as scheduled tomorrow! Again, the game starts at 3pm, but try to go there earlier so I can oversee your character creation.
Oh, and I believe it's best if you clear your schedules until 8-9pm. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |

I think, on the whole, that was pretty successful. The healer cleric is a lot of fun to play

Glad you had fun, b_b.
I did a little rp miscall there, though. The imp should have gone for your character instead of Xtian's, because as a cleric of Ioun, the Vecna'n imp should hate you most of all.
But oh well. It still was a good fight. _________________ Nosfecatu Publishing |
