I actually read a copy of the companion book, D&D for Dummies a while back. Not bad, reasonably simple and readable. D&D 3.5 though, so it's probably obsolete by now.

Same as Rev, had a pdf even. The material is quite good, but that's no surprise really. The writers have written official material for WotC before.

Believe it or not, the 4e DMG has all you need to know. It's no longer the book of Prestige Classes, xp tables, and magic items like it was in 3.x. Now it actually helps you DM.
