Dubbed 3.75, Pathfinder by Paizo (the company that published the last print version of Dragon and Dungeon mag) is sending waves. Currently at its Alpha status, it aims to fix the problems of 3.5 rather than change it.

It brings an interesting (and free, at least for now) alternative to the 4th edition game, and includes game designers like Monte Cook. Now while I will personally stick to 4e, the professional GM in me would want to check this game out. It certainly feels like 3.5, while managing to get rid of a lot of 3.5 "clutter".

Thoughts?

Checked this out a month before 4e came out. It seems that Pathfinder kinda does what 4e planned does for characters - makes them do more stuff per level using the 3.5e system. This is kinda cool for both players and DMs (i like that cos i usually use NPC antagonists with class (character classes, that is).

As for the other game systems, Pathfinder does seem to have cleared up most of the problems the old 3.5 had. Some skills and feats have been modified to be more useful than it was before.

Plus, they have their own setting and backgrounds. All of the pathfinder modules and adventure paths are done in Golarion, Paizo's version of Greyhawk or FR. With all the modules and paths they have, the setting is now rich with its own NPCs. One thing I have noticed about is is that they have more diversity in their NPCs' personalities. I'm running a game based on a Pathfinder module and my players are having fun encountering all the different NPCs in the town the campaign it set upon.

I highly suggest the game to those who wants to stick with 3.5e. In itself, Pathfinder beta should make the old games better. (More so, with the support of all the other 3.5 the books already out - though I don't know how well those other books would fit with the revisions done in the Pathfinder system).

I've looked it up, and it really is great. Very Happy
Skill ranks being 1:1 is much easier to track.
The revised classes are also neat, especially the fighter.
Cantrips and orisons at will FTW! Laughing

I've been trying to read it, although I must admit I'm too ecstatic with 4e to actually run a game yet. Although as it stands, anyone wishing to stick with 3.x should switch over to Pathfinder.

I just wonder how they'll handle epic...

I'm more concerned on how balanced it would be when prestige classes are used from the WotC books using the revised Pathfinder class abilities.

I've been trying to download this for months but my ISP is having hard time accessing their site as if Paizo is blocking me. Can someone email me a copy of pdf? It is free right?

@Xtian: Alpha 3 is 12 MB, so it won't fit emails.

If you can hand me a flash drive somehow, I'll gladly give you a copy.
