Some random DM gibberish notes, posted here so I won't lose it. Feel free to give comments if you understand.

But you don't have to understand. Razz

U_K:

(2/3)l+(1/3)g+(3/4)L=E

(2/3)E=C

where
l=class level
g=equiv PC gear
L=Lvl adjustment
E=ECL
C=CR

On multiple threats of same CR:
x+x=(3/2)x
x+x+x+x=2x

Death Knight=LA+5 all three tiers?

My mistake on the previous post; apparently it's x+x+x+x=(3/2)x, and x+x=(5/4)x for multiples of same CR.

I recently received my copy of the Immortals Handbook: BestiaryI and Ascension. The CR computation (2/3)ECL=CR seems to make sense in my PoV. That is, if i as a DM do not super-optimize my threats.

Elite Array+Fighter20+no gear=CR8. Razz With level 20 PC equipment, CR13. Similarly a Balor equipped as PC20 is CR20. I am not 100% convinced yet (I'll probably have it go through playtesting), but the math seems sensible so far.

I'm guessing this works for the 4Ed (keyword: "tier"), so I'm not even bothering with it (but I understand the math, nonetheless). You're getting too edgy with this 4ED thang, IMO. Give it some time before you fully revel in it - there isn't even enough splatbooks out there to break the game! Twisted Evil

Comment? Isn't x+x=2x? JOKE! And how come you missed this?...

It's actually for 3.5. But hey, this does have a lot of parallels to the 4e xp system, based on the spoils we got so far. Wink not to mention 4e is a lot more simple with regards to this.

I'm actually thinking if I should run one last 3.5 game (high to mid epic). If I push through with it, it'll run 'til December. Might be worth it.

(MoAlazlam is my last Pharagos game, not my last 3.5 game. I hope...)

There are items that can put measuring monster CR out of whack. Example is ring of evasion and the original retributive amulet.

I will love to play in a level 30-50 mortal-to-deity game. ^__^

DM musings #2: Christmas Tree

Ever since Kellyzeah, I've never liked too many magic items on my characters. They're hard to keep track of, and some of them (read: stat-boosting items) are just dull. Conversely, I hated loot-tracking my players.

I mean, fantasy heroes are not supposed to be bombarded by magic items. Frodo had the One Ring, and a Mithral (err, mithril?) shirt. That's it. Even Aragorn (correct me if I'm wrong LotR fans) only had his ancestral sword, and possibly that amulet from Arwen.

So in the March of Alazlam, I encouraged the use of Legacy Items, signature magic gear that my players will use through the end. It did work, to an extent; three players went for it.

In the end, though, their loot was just too hard to track. (Elron I could forgive, it fits his flavor to have n items, where n is sufficiently large) It was inherently not a player problem, though, but a core flaw of DnD3.5.

Thus I was presented with a dilemna. I cannot just remove stuff; it's not the players fault that they were outfitted like Xmas trees. But I wanted a less equipment heavy game.

Was the Acid Fog Trap a DM machination? I admit that I put the Acid Fog trap there, including the Resist Energy counter Trap. But I did it knowing full well that there was a trapfinder, and that his Search check was sufficiently high. Hmm, that makes half the fault mine, eh?

I did tell my players that it was not wise to have me run a game on such short notice. Razz

(As a side note, had you fought and defeated the four equipped Justicators, you would have gotten a decent amount of cash back. Though that'd mean that Travis would've probably failed his quest.)

So, now the equipment board is more or less clean. We get to have a new start. (Yes, the party will recover after a side quest or two). Some notes:

*I am okay with item combining. Belt of Physical Prowess +6, Headband of Mental Perfection +6, Dwarven Monk's Belt, whatever suits my players' fancy. But please, I want to avoid Abjurant Dwarven Monk's Belt of Perfection +6.

*Legacy Items are resistant (not immune) to equipment attacks, by virtue of their higher hp. They are a nice choice, all things considered. boy_bakal has already expressed a desire for Elron to have a special Legacy Set

*I prefer my players to have at maximum four signature items (Legacy Items and/or artifacts and/or items that cost anywhere between 25-50% of their average PC level), plus at most two minor items (Magical Items that don't fall into this category). Utility items such as Murlynd's spoon, Everburning Torch are not considered in that limit. Less bookkeeping, right? Enemy NPC's will more or less be similarly equipped.

*While I will make traps that attack equipment in general, my NPC's will never sink so low as to single out your spell component pouch. That's just... wrong, from personal experience. @.@ I trust my players won't do the same.

**********

Oh, and one final DM note: When I use the word prefer, (ie, preferably no casters... I prefer a maximum of six items) I am not saying that you must do it. In the above example, Elron's very nature is able to bypass that. It is not a restriction; it's a suggestion.

**********

Here's to hoping 4e fixes this problem. :/ Magic items should be a bonus, not a necessity.

You know, I just might. I never did like to start my characters at epic, though.

But if we want to play all the way to 50, starting at 17 means that'll take a long time. For alas, gone are the days when we played DnD everyday. (and even if we did play the way we did back then, I think that span will take two and a half semesters. @.@)

What I would like to do is play a character from level 1-50 (or more likely, run a game that'll last that long). While 30 seems to be a WotC hard cap for 4e, I'm pretty certain Dicefreaks, Upper_Krust, and a whole bunch of others will have other ideas. If we run it once a moth, 5e will come out before we finish Laughing . Those are gonna be 8 years of fun.

Epic.
I don't plan to create an entirely new character but to continue an existing one. Come on...there's still adventure after Vlaakith the Lich Queen.

_________
Xmas tree.
All in all, Archidamus is still an effective character since his weapon and armor is still good. Almost. I'm pretty sure he can easily find levels 1-4 wizard spells for his spellbook. What was so frustrating is the fact that flipping through DMG and MIC for items was the most time consuming part of item creation. Even with my character's excessive multiclassing making his skill points allocation troublesome, putting down the number of scrolls, wands, items, and their prices and keeping track of changes made to the character was very inconvinient. Then losing them all then doing it again, and again, is very frustrating.

Dickie was a VoP character and well... he was pretty convinient tracking down his possession (a white loin cloth). What was hard part of playing him was the trouble of changing his stats with every form. THen level up then changing them again.

The loincloth was white? Huh. Razz All this time I thought it was some sort of Ifugao ethnic loincloth. Well, the pre-existing characters would work.

Re: Tracking. I feel your pain. I'm actually quite thankful that you did your bookkeeping religiously. I could never inspire all my players to do that (except, strangely, oghma. He does a decent amount of bookkeeping for me).

Now as DM, I like to keep track of all your possessions. But no matter how much I do it, I still end up getting really surprised. @.@ My bad, I suppose.

In any case, the Acid Fog incident will make us all do more work.

Frustrating? Yes. But we'll live.

MATURE!

Taken from http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=931294

For a change of pace. Enjoy, my players.

Know your alignment! Very Happy

Step1: Choose a character you've rp'd before. (alternatively, you can rp a game version of yourself)
Step2: Determine what that character will you do in these scenarios.

1. An evil sorcerer, who burns whole villages, rapes kittens, and wears spiky black armor, has been cornered in a tower. He has a dozen children as hostages, and is threatening to kill them if you don't let him escape, but it is obvious he will continue to practice his atrocities if allowed to live. There's no way in hell you can get to him in time to save the children, should he choose to kill them, and you have no access to invisibility or cover.

2. You've fallen for a comely, intelligent, and in all other ways desirable guy/girl. Said NPC is married to a real shrew/sob who cheats, manipulates, and is otherwise abusive. Spouse is away from home for the time being, but will return in a few weeks.

3. You are on your way to deliver Rare Potion Alpha to the remote village of Beta, so you can give it to the Archwizard Gamma in exchange for the magic sword you need to defeat the evil Lord Epsilon. On your way to Beta, you pass through the township of Sigma, which is about to be destroyed by a pack of gnolls. If you stop and fight off the gnolls, it is likely that servants of Lord Epsilon will buy or steal the sword before you can.

4. You catch a halfling picking your pocket.

5. You catch a kobold picking your pocket.

6. You catch a barbazu picking your pocket.

7. You catch a vampire picking your pocket.

8. You catch the hottest guy/girl/horse you've ever seen picking your pocket.

9. You have defeated the Princess of Nightmares and are standing over her, weapons drawn. Tears come to her young eyes, and she begs you not to kill her, pleading for mercy, offering to do anything you want in exchange for her life.

10. Your king has ordered you to defend his loggers from the attacks of a tribe of orcs, who gruesomely and painfully slaughter anyone that tries to harvest from their forest.

11. Your king has ordered you to defend his loggers from the attacks of a city-state of elves, who chase away anyone that tries to harvest from their forest, killing those who won't run.

12. You've just slain your first dragon, and are just planning to hit the nearest tavern and spend part of the hoard celebrating, when you notice the dragon's eggs are about to hatch.

13. An emissary of Demogorgon offers you demonic backup in your campaign against the Cult of Mephistopheles.

14. The baron taxes his subjects to the point of abject poverty and otherwise abuses them as he sees fit, but is a military genius whose tactics have kept the land safe from the ogres and hill giants who routinely attack. He is the rightful ruler, and is descended from a long line of (mostly benevolent) barons.

15. You have some downtime before your next adventurer, for which you've already prepared as much as possible. How do you spend the time?

16. You and another party member both want the same magic item. Both of you could make good use of it.

17. You've defeated a vile assassin who works for the local organized crime syndacate and are going through his treasure, when his family lays claim to his money. This includes his two children, who did not know their father was a criminal.

18. You are engaged, but not yet married. While on an adventure, that nymph who you've been lusting after ever since she first started giving you adventure hooks at first level finally takes an interest in you. She wants as much action as she can get from you, and can be trusted to keep it a secret.

(note: I couldn't think of a male counterpart to a nymph, so just replace her with a really hot guy of whatever species you like the most if appropriate)

19. A rival adventuring party is headed for the same dungeon as you, and are known to be seeking the same magic artifact for their own purposes. You know where they are and where they will be spending the night before they reach the dungeon.

20. A serial killer has offered you more gold than you will ever see again in exchange for keeping his identity a secret.

So, what's my alignment?

Nothing, coz you're dead Laughing Take on a horde of Orcs, Their enemy king, a Black-armored sorcerer, a nymph, the evil Lord Epsilon, Demogorgon, Mephistopheles, the Princess of Nightmares, just to name a few?

Yup. Just dead. And someone likely consumed your soul, too.

I guess I'd play this one. When and where?

I'm thinking of taking Jaykie's advice: play my short-played gnome beguiler unseen seer. I have to give him a character name, though, as when I played him, he was given some random name. Confused

Shameless post count raiser. Razz But hey, people might want to see her stats. I think I miscalculated a bit, too (I don't think I added the divine bonus to her spell save DC's).

Without further ado, here she is. Ta-da!

Noticed that, too. Isn't Death Metal that dude who started out as an enemy but turned into an ally towards the end of Combatron? *nostalgia*

DM checklist for MoA:

*juaber artifacts (check)
*Death Blade (check)
*Famine Blade (work transferred to Q)
*Elron's Doom Armor (Item Set) (wip)
*IC thread (check)
*Fort Alazlam (read. Dungeon) (wip)
*Area surrounding Fort Alazlam (check)
*War of Alazlam's Horsemen (check)
*Mandrakori maneuver elements (check)

Lots of work to do. Hopefully one month is enough.

Edited checklist. Only two things to work on.

**********

DMing high-level is an irritation. It's difficult to guess-timate your players' capabilities, so without an accurate gauge, the opponents are either too easy, or (in the case of DM's like me, who are also optimizers) they end up being impossible to defeat.

This is far from my desirable output.

My solution? I required my players, from the start, to have a copy of their characters with me.

As the levels got higher, though, I noted that the post-gametime was not enough to update two character sheets (i was given a multitude of "to follow"s). So I abandoned the idea, and settled with them posting certain character stats online. After all, they have a month in between games to figure it out. Easy task, eh?

I didn't account for their laziness, though. Understandable, a game isn't supposed to have "responsibilities and work" tied to them.

But I work for their enjoyment. I spend a whole month conceiving, preparing, and amping up my game in the IC. And I did tell them that joining my games require commitment.

Where's that commitment now? Only three (four, if you count new player dark_axis) people have stuck with me.

I'm thinking of just canceling MoAlazlam. But it's almost over. It's just the finale that's left. Seems like a terrible waste to just give up now.

So I'm finishing my game. I'm going to design the encounters using the numbers that the four devoted players will give me. Hopefully I get the numbers right.

**********

Here's to hoping 4e is mathcraft-light as they promise it to be.

Hellfire Spell [Metamagic, Vile]
Pre-requisites: Disciple of Darkness, Searing spell, Violate Spell
Benefit: When applied to a spell with the fire descriptor, all damage is made by hellfire, and is thus evil, and ignores any resistance or immunity to fire. Whenever you cast a Hellfire Spell, you take 1 Constitution damage.
A Hellfire Spell takes up a spell slot level 1 higher than the spell's normal level.

Twisted Evil

Hellfire Cloud Trap: CR10; magic device; sound trigger (closing door); automatic reset; spell effect (4d6 hellfire damage, Reflex DC22 half, every round for 17 rounds). Search DC33, Disable Device DC33.
