RANDOM QUESTION:
Do you think cosplayers should make their own costumes? Or, at the very least, have friends make 'em instead of "professional" seamstresses/tailors?
I wonder about this because the practice of commissioning costumes seems much more common here (where the average cost/quality of costume you can get from tailors etc is often much better than anything you could come up with on your own) than in say, the USA (though ebay and the magic of ordering through Chinese makers has opened up an entire new WORLD of possibilities.  ) |

It's not my forte, mind, but my own centavos:
-"Should" is a strong word. I think an important thing to consider is why somebody is in the hobby. If they get their kicks from creating/emulating something beautiful, that person is likely to get more fulfillment from scratch-building/sewing the costumes, etc. themselves. If playing the role is more important, then the source of the costume seems less important, and hell a well-made suit would probably be a great aid.
-It also does depend on the type of costume and skills of the cosplayer. I'd love to try playing a Stormtrooper, Mandalorian, or Republic Commando, but I don't have the skillset to build these, but if I ever did scrape up the moola, there are commercially available costumes out there. Other costumes, such as say those mecha by Athanasia Kitty and crew, can't be commissioned easily, and hell, would seem damned awesome to scratch-build.
-People have money to spend. Other people have marketable skills. It seems a shame to interfere in that commerce and stop the flow of money, what with the funky economic situation. At least local seamstresses and tailors are putting their skills to good use. XD

@Revan: Yeah, I guess 'should' is too strong a word. I'm mostly looking at 'serious' cosplayers (but still hobbyists, not hired mascots) when I think of this.
I asked a few other friends this, and we pretty much agree that it's important to consider the person's reasons for cosplaying. For one, if you're entering your costume, AS A COSTUME, in a competition-- you'd BETTER have made most of it yourself. It's not fair to win in a costume you just bought off someone else. On the other hand, if you're in a PERFORMANCE competition or something, yeah, it matters less.
Also, if you're some creepy attention-seeker who dresses up in skimpy outfits to get fanboys...yeah, it would be merited if you at least sewed costumes yourself.
For people who're just in the hobby for pure fun and to hang out with their friends, it goes without saying that the most important thing is well, having fun, and less where their costume comes from!
On the other hand, though, I don't think there's any costume SO complicated that you can't at least craft part of it yourself, even if it's just painting the gilt on the armor or sculpting a small accessory. I feel that sort of personal touch is important to make the costume feel like its yours.
I know a few people who let others commission outfits from 'em. It's a brisk business, all right. |
